Bishop Michael Coleman's dream had been to have a Catholic Bookshop to serve both the extensive Diocese of Port Elizabeth and the surrounding dioceses because at the time the nearest bookshops were in Cape Town and Durban. It was also seen as an ecumenical outreach and service to other denominations. This dream became a reality on 1st March 1989.

Mrs. Jill Gomes was the Manager and her husband, Mario, took care of the accounting side. The goal was to have a ready supply of bibles, devotional literature, as well as books on catechetics, spirituality, scripture and allied subjects. There would also be a variety of devotional and repository articles.

The bookshop was opened in the former boardroom of the Bishop’s wing of St. Augustine’s Cathedral presbytery. In 1992 Mrs. Norah Beukes took over the reins and the enterprise continued to grow; by 1999 it was necessary to move to larger premises with better parking facilities (the Catechetical Centre in Newton Park). Since 2001 Mrs. Beukes has been supported by Mrs. Denise Steenkamp. Together they have made the shop a place of joy, peace and spiritual development.

The bookshop which started with modest stock now has a comprehensive range of repository articles and books. Its clientele continues to grow with people from every denomination calling in to its quiet premises and orders coming in from as far away as Aliwal North and Johannesburg.
