catechetics ministry
In 1979 Father Paddy Barry set up a Catechetical Centre in Newton Park, with suitable offices, lecture rooms and other facilities. During this period Sr. Eileen Bogues MSA and Ms. Josephine Buhagiar joined the team. They have both done Trojan work in training and organizing coordinators and leaders in the various regions throughout the diocese until their retirement in 2006. They also wrote, printed and published catechetical material for use in the diocese and raised funds in order to do so. Mrs. Angeline Oakes has taken over as Coordinator of the Catechetical Commission for the Port Elizabeth Deanery.
In the early 1990’s Bishop Coleman requested that
a special effort be made to offer catechesis in the local languages and
with Sr. Bernardis Kriener OP in King William’s Town as coordinator
and Mr. Sonwabo Gqamlana taking over the care of Xhosa-speaking parishes
the Border / Midlands Deanery established its offices and training facilities
in the King William’s Town presbytery premises.
The East London Deanery Catechetical Commission is headed by Sr. Agnes
Kreuzberg OP. She is assisted by Sr. Regina Giwu OP who cares for the
needs of Xhosa speaking catechists.
Hundreds of volunteer catechists from all parish communities give unstintingly of their time and talent to teach our children throughout the diocese.
