Lay Involvement in the Prison Ministry began in the 1950’s with Mrs. Dorothy Wynne. She was appointed to visit the female section of the North End Prison on Sunday mornings. Mrs. Wynne was joined in her ministry 20 years later by Mrs. Pat Tinsley (recently retired). Strict ‘security’ rules were in place: they were required to visit singly with wardresses in attendance throughout the session. Hymns, Scripture readings and prayers including recitation of the Rosary formed the format of their services. Proselytizing was forbidden.
In 1973 the late Fr. M. O’Brien became Prison chaplain and was able to offer Holy Mass in the prison once a month with the prison visitors preparing the women for the Sacraments. Regular inter-denominational conferences held at St. Alban’s Prison were a vital source of growth and empowerment. Back-up home visits after the prisoner’s discharge was seen as an important aspect of this ministry, as the aftercare and reconciliation of offenders and their families.
Bishop Michael Coleman appointed Mr. Ken Milton to take over as coordinator of the prison ministry in the 1990’s. The diocese has sixteen lay workers assist five priests who are available for confessions and other special needs.

Association of Catholic Tertiary Students
WHAT IS ACTS?
The Association of Catholic Tertiary Students was founded in Johannesbueg
in December 1993 when both the CASA (Catholic Students Association) and
NCFS (National Catholic Federation of Students) were dissolved. Since
December 1993 thirty-five ACTS Branches with accompanying University Catholic
Chaplaincies have been established throughout South Africa.
ACTS VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT 2009/2010
Having discerned the signs of the times within the context of the South
African Yoiuth, ACTS sees the way forward to addressing the lack of commitment,
lack of knowledge about out faith, and the losss of "our" Catholic
Identity as:
1. Evangilization by taking ownership of the Church
2. Developing a new consciousness with regard to student poverty, which
leads to an alternative economic policy based on the Gospel.
